Usuk Homelands Limited (UHL) was registered in the year 2000 as a limited company to address the challenges faced by the people of North Teso – Katakwi District. For time immemorial, the main economic activity in the region was subsistence agriculture (crop & animal husbandry), without value addition. The changing and turbulent economic and competitive environment world over has dictated upon the life style of the people in this region. Traditional crops (millet, sorghum, cassava, etc) have hitherto become cash crops, but require value addition to stay in global competitive business environment.
A few of the so called successful farmers in the region , at that time managed with the application of indigenous knowledge (IK). However, in today’s competitive economic and business environment, and more so, with the advent of Information Technology (IT), the region cannot offer quality goods and services to satisfy the present and future customers. Customer tastes and preferences have kept on changing. There is need for new approaches such as value addition to goods and services, develop sustainable income generating projects and offer management consultancy services for sustainable business operations, ultimately remaining nationally, regionally and globally competitive.
Therefore, Usuk Homelands Limited was established to address such challenges by; starting good farming practices to provide quality goods and services, value addition through processing agricultural inputs for ready markets, developing sustainable income generating projects for socio-economic transformation, conducting research and offering professional consultancy management services to build management capacity for business sustainability in the region.
